Birth, Marriage and Death records from the Diary of Joshua Hempstead

Joshua Hempstead 2nd was born in the old Hempstead house in New London, CT on 1 Sep 1678. He performed a diversity of occupations; he was farmer, surveyor, house and ship carpenter, attorney, stonecutter, sailor and trader. He generally held 3 or 4 town offices, was justice of the peace, judge of probate, executor of many wills, overseer to widows, guardian to orphans, member of many committees, general advisor, and cousin to half of the community.

The original diary is in separate volumes comprising about 750 pages of closely written manuscript on unlined paper. It was a private journal kept by Joshua Hempstead from 8 September 1711 through 3 November 1758. It was published as a book in 1901 by The New London County Historical Society and more recently reprinted in 19857.
