1055. Tree Toad at Breakheart Pond - Drive-by
Exeter, RI

A little drive-by treat not too far from the trailhead for RI's first official letterbox, planted on Jan. 1, 1999 by employees of EMS from Waterford, CT! (We still remember what a fun little "mini-meet" we had going back out there again on X-C skis to revisit and celebrate its "10th anniversary" so many years ago now, too!;)

Anyway, when we first got this little tree frog from SHH down in GA last fall, we had thought about planting it on one of the big loops around the Great Swamp in Kingston, RI, especially if we had managed to get more "swamp critters" or whatever other sorts of stamps to plant along with it. However, as time went by and some local preserves started closing down due to the coronavirus pandemic, we thought that we had better just get it back out there anywhere in RI that was still accessible. So, after nearly a month of "self-quarantine" and several months of "zero letterboxing" in RI, we were thrilled to see that nairon had planted a new box in Arcadia State Forest, where hiking on the extensive trail system is still allowed, so we decided to plant this box in the general area as part of our Easter outing, too!

To find this quick and easy one, take dirt Frosty Hollow Road north from Ten Rod Road near the old white church to the "T" junction, and turn right on Breakheart Pond Road to the ample dirt parking lot at the end on the left, just after the left curve by the fish ladder. From the first parking spot on the left there, just look across the flat grassy area to see a large double-trunk white pine with many fingers in front of a stone wall. This little tree toad in a small round lock n' lock is just starting to climb up behind the base of that pine tree, so make sure he stays well hidden under a huge pile of pine needles! We hope that every letterboxer who visits will plant more boxes out on the wonderful trails around here as a courtesy to help keep us all getting out for some exercise during these difficult times as well!
