1089. What Happens in ... Our Hometown! (2)
Charlestown, RI
Charlestown, RI has been our hometown for almost three decades now, ever since we first heard that Pete's former job with NUWC would be moving from New London, CT to Newport, RI. For the first few years, he commuted west, the next few years he commuted east (until retirement), the next couple of decades we spent traveling, hiking and letterboxing, and now we're mostly just hanging out at home again in conjunction with the coronavirus pandemic "stay at home" order from our RI Governor Gina Raimondo.
So, when our new Charlestown "neighbor", moonstone, recently put out a "My Hometown" letterbox not far from our house, we immediately thought of an old stamp that had been kicking around in our "letterboxing junk box" for a long time, but we hadn't known quite what to do with it. It was a clear plastic bought message stamp left by LCAB as a first finder prize at one of her boxes, but now being stuck for so long in our hometown, it suddenly had new meaning for us! So, to get the message, strangely appropriate for these COVID times, take the same old road in to the Vin Gormley Trail from Buckeye Brook Road as mentioned in moonstone's "Hometown" clue (or in the clue for our newly transformed "Lil' Butterfly";-), but instead of going right 40 steps on the yellow-blazed trail, go left on it about 40 steps to the yellow-blazed pine on your left. Take a few steps off trail to the right and look under a lichen-covered branch in front of the small sitting rock for the message on the back side of a thin 2x3" piece of rock. Now just go 4-5 steps west and look under the SW nose of a smaller rock for a little fill-in-the-blank "travelin' light" that works right now for our hometown! Looks like for a couple of months, given the current circumstances, we and moonstone may be planting letterboxes just for each other, but that's fine with us - during these times we especially appreciate a little local diversion!;-)
