1091 Little Bird Flying through the Azaleas
Kingstown, RI
While checking on some of our older boxes close to home during the coronavirus pandemic of 2020, we discovered that the box ("Among the Azaleas") that we had planted many years earlier under the Troll Bridge at the Kinney Azalea Gardens in Kingston, RI seemed to be no longer there. However, since the gardens are still such a lovely place to visit, especially in the month of May, we decided to leave a little "travelin' light" stone with a bird on back that we just happened to have with us at a different spot in the preserve.
The gardens, formerly owned by a URI Botany professor and still open to the public, are located behind the house at 2391 Kingston Road, which is on the left scarcely a quarter mile south of the junction of routes 138 and 108, just west of the village formerly known as "Little Rest". There is a small sign at the entrance driveway, but it may be easier to spot the southern exit sign first. Some of the trails that start from the parking lot behind the house are also currently marked with in and out signs to keep people from bumping into each other on the narrower sections, although we only spotted one other couple the whole time we were there and we left the little bird on one of the wider trail sections anyway.
So, to find the little bird's current nesting spot, simply head straight out from the parking lot on the main trail towards the Moon Gate, then turn left just before it to go north on the wide trail towards the Vernal Pool with a hollow old double oak near the corner of a stone wall on the right. Directly across from this is a cedar sportingly holding up a narrow slice of door with a brown doorknob on it! Behind that cedar on the back of a small 1" whitish stone under an 8" half lichen-covered rock is where we left the little bird. Hope you have a chance to stamp it and explore the rest of the beautiful trails here as well!
