1122. View From the Top - stroll
Palenville, NY
1 Aug 2020

On one of our summer of 2020 trips to upstate NY for the Catskill/Adirondack Fire Tower Challenge, we were pleased to see that the usual clutter of cars that we had remembered from years past along route 23 between Palenville and Haines Falls was now mostly gone, due partly to trail closures, but also to construction of a relatively new parking lot to get people going down to K-falls from above rather than coming up from below. To get to this "view from the top", simply follow the brown signs to the falls and the large Laurel House parking lot, then take the short quarter-mile stroll to the viewing platform itself. Stop at the nearby info kiosk to see what Laurel House used to look like a hundred or so years ago, then turn around and take 9 steps back along the trail to the first large rooty tree on the right. On its right side (the side facing the kiosk), look in the root cubby with the tiny knob in it under a few small stones for the small flat gray stone that has a tiny "carved-on-the spot" memento stamp glued on back! Don't expect much - it's just a little "travelin' light", but there are plenty of great stamps to find in these parts if you have more time to explore!
