1127. A Blast From the Past
24 Aug 2020

First of all, we have to say that we are so grateful to NH for being the only New England state to currently and consistently welcome RI residents during this summer of COVID when all the other nearby states have been imposing restrictions on us! Since there has been almost no new letterboxing whatsoever for us to do in RI during the entire past six months (other than the boxes that we and moonstone have been planting for each other down in “South County”, of course!;-), we really appreciate this opportunity to go up to NH to go on actual letterboxing adventures to search for literally hundreds of boxes, both new and old, in dozens of different NH towns and preserves from the southern border of the Granite State to its northern tip! This is especially fun for us since we have been spending most of our recent summers going out west, so getting back out on some of these lovely NH trails, especially the mountain ones, really reminds us of our old hiking times and early letterboxing days, so for us it seems like quite a “blast from the past”!

So, in memory of that and as a small token of our appreciation, in addition to re-listing some of our older NH mystery boxes and such, we decided to leave a quick carved-on-the-spot “travelin’ light” at a place that some folks may remember as having previously harbored a nearby letterbox, but that we felt deserved a “second glance”. To find this little memento, simply make your way to a view of NH’s last surviving blast furnace, which can be seen across the river from “Splude’s Place”. Cross the wood bridge and turn to face the furnace across the river. Harlequin should be on your right right and a large birch on your left. Just lift the small chunk of slag on the front side of the birch and look on the back side of the small triangular stone under a birch curl for this little “blast from the past”!
