1133. Puzzle Rock Boxes (2) - walk
planet earth Mystery
15 Sep 2020

For awhile now, we had been intending to plant another set of sewsewbizzy's "puzzle stamps1 (since we never seem to be able to guess quite what they were originally meant to represent;-) at some appropriate place. We were thinking that these particular stamps looked a bit like interlocking puzzle pieces, so we were hoping that we might find some fractured rocks somewhere out west along our travels that might provide a fitting home for them.

Well, 2020 certainly did not turn out to be a year conducive to travel for us! Due to high Covid rates in our state, we Rhode Islanders have been restricted for many months now from going almost anywhere other than on short trips over to CT, and one trip north to NH in August after which our travelin' van broke down anyway and is still sitting at the garage now over a month later! On one of our short early summer hops over to CT, however, we had happened to spot a paved driveway leading up to a parking lot that we hadn't noticed before on the route we were taking westward toward Gillette Castle. A quick look at the trailhead map at the new preserve showed a feature called "Puzzle Rock", so that is where we decided to set our sights for a future visit once we got our stamps together!

So, to find out exactly where we ended up planting these particular stamps, simply make your way to "Puzzle Rock" by using the fuchsia trail either through "Fractured Valley" or "Dark Hollow". Just south from the junction onto the red trail, you should see Puzzle Rock trailside left. Standing on the trail by this large cracked rock formation, take 20 steps at 20 degrees and look under a stone on the north side of a tight 3-trunk tree near a tree with multiple signs and blazes. Then continue a half dozen steps more and look under the root handle on the southerly side of the tree that is hugging a slightly tilted sitting rock to its east. As you loop back to the trailhead, you may be able to find some other artifacts left behind recently by a couple of our nice CT letterboxing neighbors as well!
