1138-1139 New Red Bliss "Mash-a-Potato" Trail in CT! - walk
CT Mystery thinker
Well, we're quite a bit behind on getting some of our recent letterbox clues ready for posting, but we just had to try to get this one out as soon as possible because it's on a brand new "potato trail" that we just found out about from our friends C & S from Westerly Band, and you all know how excited we get about new trails! There are also some new "gravy trails" in the area, so if anyone wants to add a "gravy boat" or a "gravy train" while visiting here, that would be great, too!
Anyway, these new trails may be "small potatoes" to some folks, since there are already plenty of lovely blue-blaze trails in this particular "patchy area", but we were just so tickled pink to find "red bliss" out here that most folks don't even know about yet that we simply had to plant something! The potato stamp is recycled from our original "Stone Soup" gathering, which was actually the 8th Southern RI Annual Fall Gathering back in 2008, if we remember correctly, but the potato masher is a brand new quick-carve "travelin' light" on the back of a small flat triangular stone, for those who would like to find something new besides the trail.
To find the trail itself, go to the end of the gravel Green Falls Road just past the state forest campground, and park in the 2-car trailhead parking spot on the right. We went up the road just a few steps past the green gate, and turned right on the blue and red trail to some pretty overlooks of the pond. Then we turned left on the blue trail for a short while, and spotted red on the left before we got to the shelter. Although there was no named sign here yet at the time that we planted in October of 2020, rest assured that if you do manage to find the online mountain bike map related to this area, it really does have to do with potatoes and gravy!
Anyway, take the red trail for awhile until you find an area with several large boulders ahead. The triple oak to the left of the flat-faced left side boulder holds a white film canister with small potatoes under leaves and white birch sticks on the right side middle of its low bowl belly. Now look across the trail to see another flat-faced boulder into which two fairly thin trees are mashing themselves. Behind the right hand one just in front of the boulder is where you should find the small flat triangular stone with the potato masher on back. Blue and brown colored ink pens seem to work best for us, but a dull red bliss potato color might work well, too!
Now you could turn back the way you came, but you're almost half way around the loop, so you could also just continue on red, cross a boardwalk, pass a small wetland area on the left and the yellow "gravy trail" on the right, then turn left when you reach the gravel road to loop back to your car. Hope you enjoyed finding a little bit of bliss walking through the CT woods!
1140. Resurrection Rock - drive-by

Got up early to make quick foray into "higher rated part of RI" without having to do longer hike this time. Started from field far back of resurrection. After completing climb, found rock by car. 4 feet up in tree slightly left and behind stone, find rock on back of stone. Just "travelin' light" ...
