1156. More Ornaments Hop from One Campground to Another (2)
Voluntown, CT
We managed to recover a few more boxes from our old “Favorite Ornaments” series that were once on a now really deteriorated trail in the Burlingame campground area of Charlestown, RI.
So, while X-C skiing for several days in a row in Voluntown, CT, we decided to transplant them to another nearby campground, in the state forest a mile or so north and west of the junction of routes 138 and 49, where you can park by the field once used for dog sled training, and then follow either the northern or southern boulder rows around the field to head towards the camping area.
Once in the campground itself, first find Smokey’s plea to campers and then a narrow “No Setting Up” sign at the rear of a nearby campsite. From there, turn right to cut through to the next campsite, then cut left through 2 large cut trunks to a good-sized hemlock ahead. Here, turn right to go behind a big fallen tree and find “Gingerbread Man” (carved by Psychokiwis) tucked behind sticks under the cavernous middle part of the fallen trunk.
Now continue through the campground toward the exit gate, then turn right through another gate onto DEP Trail I. Shortly at the red arrow on a white diamond on the right, cut through 4 large hemlocks on the left for about 25 steps and look behind a branch standing up in the backside of a nearby multi-trunk hemlock for “Angel Grace” (carved by Sadie and Russ). From here it’s just an short easy hop straight back to your car by the field.
