1176. Woodland Cuppa - Hand-carved Walk
Location: Voluntown, CT
Placed 3/24/2021
We had been thinking ever since we planted our "Italian Thanksgiving" series in 2020 that perhaps we should add something to drink along that same section of the Gravy trail if no one else happened to add something like that there. We had, of course, considered wine, but when quiltjoy added some pumpkin pie nearby (which was actually what we had on that Thanksgiving Day - surprisingly not tiramisu;-), we decided we might as well add a woodland cup of coffee left over from one of our Southern RI Annual Fall Gatherings at Kettle Pond many years ago! So, to find this "woodland cuppa", park in the small parking lot in front of a green gate about 1/2 mile east of Tarklin Hill Road on Route 138 and about the same distance west of the RI state border. (Note: this is not the entrance to Pachaug State Forest with the CT shield sign just west a bit up the road.)
Go around the green gate and immediately take the yellow trail on the left marked by two yellow blazes on a tree with a brown sign underneath. You will be following this yellow trail for about 3/4 mile, passing several other leftovers and such to find this box, so you might as well continue for "Italian Thanksgiving" just a bit further along the trail while you're out this way, if you haven't already gotten it.
If you have already eaten your fill, though, and are just now going for dessert, simply step down a 4 foot long mountain biker-type rock ramp next to a 6 foot bushy pine on the left and continue with the yellow blazed trail another 60 steps or so, curving left around a ledge. Off trail a few steps left along this ledge are two trees growing out of the side of the ledge. The roots of the left tree form a small serving slot for a "woodland cuppa". Please replace with care!
