4. Happy Spring!

Finally getting around to planting these stamps well after we had expected to be doing that. The namesake stamp was supposed to be planted on Lantern Hill in CT for the first day of spring, but that never happened. Then the others were supposed to be planted for Easter, but that didn't happen either, so we just decided to put them together and get them planted while it is still spring at least!

Last spring we had reinstated our old RI HHH (Inn of the End) at Canonchet Preserves and had suggested that other people might want to plant in this area as well. We were very pleased that several different groups of people actually took us up on that suggestion, but no one continued on as far as the North Road entrance to the preserve, so we figured we might as well put this series out starting from the parking lot there on the right about a mile and a half up North Road from Route 3 in Hopkinton.

Start out on the unmarked trail north from the kiosk and quickly join the white blazes at a right turn gently downhill through the fallen leaves. Now you just have to follow that white trail like a "carrot stick" about a half mile to the junction with the orangish-yellow trail that goes both ways. First go right about 60 steps to where there is a double-blazed tree on the right and a single large "carrot blaze" on a low rock trailside left. The left side of that carrot rock holds three fat carrots tucked in a black pouch (please be sure to use orange ink!)

Now go back to the junction with the white trail and proceed another 65 steps or so straight on the yellow trail to where a fallen log juts diagonally left across the trail. Follow the general line of the log (310*) off trail about 20 steps and look in the stone "rabbit hutch" that is to the left of the large stone "rabbit" (with ears flattened down) that is in front of the "back rest" of the stone couch. (some imagination required here;-)

Once again back to the white trail junction and back up the hill just under 200 steps to a foundation just a bit off trail on the right. From the southwest corner of the foundation, take about two dozen steps west to the corner of a stone wall. Under leaves and the leftmost of three small rocks in a cubby just to the right of that corner and just above a somewhat heart-shaped rock is where we left the pouched flower basket.

Finally all the way back up to that slight left turn that takes you back towards your car. You may notice some lily of the valleys blooming here on the right if you come in May. Very soon thereafter (almost back to the parking lot) is a 3' boulder a few steps off trail left with a pill bottle tucked under its back lip. Please re-hide carefully. Thanks for visiting and have a Happy Spring!
