1192. Popping through on the way up Pillsbury
9/21/2021
Speculator, NY
Just getting to the trailhead to start the climb up to this fire tower mountain is fun for those who may not feel like climbing all the way up to the top and just want to take in some scenery along the way, but we do hope it provides some further impetus to pop on out there anyway! We made the stamp years ago as a "travelin' light" attached to the back of a little mountain-shaped stone to discreetly place on top, as we did at several other Adirondack fire tower climbs over the years, but since there are already some nice boxes up there on Pillsbury, we decided to just leave this little name stamp down near the bottom.
So, from the "Sled Harbor" parking area on the north side of the dirt road a few miles west from Perkins Clearing on the dirt "half loop" road off of route 30 between Speculator and Indian Lake, just continue on foot another hundred steps up the road to the next now closed road on the right that has a sign on a nearby tree stating "Pillsbury Mountain 1.6 miles" . However, all you have to do to find this little stamp is walk about 300 steps!
As you head up the gentle rise and reach a point where the trail first starts to level off, you should see a couple of 2' rocks on the right. The closer one has a low arched alcove on the side facing the trail. Without disturbing any other stones that are sleeping in that little cave, just reach carefully into the bottom left corner of the arch behind one squarish 3" stone for slightly darker reddish triangular stone with Pillsbury impressed on its back and be sure to replace it exactly as found before heading up the mountain or going back down to your car!
