1208. RI Walks Challenge - S prague F arm
Glocester, RI
4/7/22
One of the cutest projects we have seen that started out during the COVID pandemic to get people outdoors a bit more exploring their local woodlands has been the RI Walks Challenge to find a metal carving of a "plant creature" attached to a tree in each of 30 different RI preserves. RIclimber was the one who alerted us to this project in the first place by planting nearby letterboxes in some of the preserves over on his "eastern" side of the state. So, as if just going for walks to see the rest of those "plant creatures" themselves on each of their lovely preserves wasn't enough, naturally we started thinking how cool it would be if all 30 of them could get little rubber stamp carvings of the "plant creatures" to go along with those larger metal ones!
Anyway, after planting the four closest ones to our southwestern corner of the state, and then seeing Salad Rocket continuing the project on four preserves closer to his home turf, we were delighted when RIclimber said he had four more carvings ready to go that we could plant for him in the northwestern part of RI as well! To find this particular "leaf critter", drive less than a mile south from route 44 in Glocester down Pine Orchard Road to the marked parking lot on the west side of the roa, then follow the white trail, perhaps stopping to read some historical info along the way, until you see the tree with the metal critter carving on it. Facing it, look under the northwestern lip of the 2'X4' boulder a few feet behind and left under sticks and stones!
Now back to thinking how many other nice trails (currently without boxes;-) there are in this area, and how if everyone who boxes in RI were to pick a preserve or two at which to plant a "leaf critter", we could quickly cover this whole RI plant project! Hope that happens!
