"Jewels of the Baltic": Visby
6/10/23 walk

1229. Visby, Gotland: While visiting this medieval walled and gated Hanseatic town on the "island of churches" (92 of them, most now in ruins) we decided we might as well leave a "travelin' light" memento at one of them. So, we chose St. Olof's on the southeast corner of the Botanical Gardens because of its beautiful covering of murgrona (English Ivy). From the sign describing the original church from the early 13th century, we went past the murgrona to the opposite side of the church remains where two small picket gates blocked some stairs leading upward behind them. The gate on the right had a sign saying climbing prohibited, so we just took a step or two past the opening of the gate on the left to leave our tiny "travelin' light" stone for Visby under another stone on a small ledge less than a foot off the ground. Hope it rests as easy here in this quiet corner as we rested on the nearby shady benches.
