1244. Another Eastern Mediterranean Cruise: Italy (Salerno)
Salerno, Italy
Some folks might be tempted to skip straight past Salerno, the largest gateway town on their way further out on the Amalfi Coast, but we actually found its winding medieval streets with murals and curling poetry, museums, churches of different centuries and the oldest school of medicine in the entire world to be quite interesting. From the cruise port heading northerly toward Teatro Verdi, go toward the southeast side of the nearby park called Villa Communale to find an arch-shaped structure with a fountain bubbling out of ferns in the middle. Facing the front spouts, go 4-5 steps from the right side of the structure to a multi trunk tree and check under the rock at its mid base for a small round gray stone with "Italy" on its back (to distinguish it from the "Italia" stone that we left near Castell del Uovo several years ago in Naples!:-)
