1274) Heraklion - Palace of Knossos stroll, planted March 1, 2026
Heraklion on the island of Crete is famous for its wonderful Archaeological Museum and the nearby Palace of Knossos showcasing the vibrant culture of the Minoan civilization from over 3500 to 4000 years ago! Getting back to revisit those places for the first time in over 50 years was a real treat, especially since this time we had another stamp to plant graciously carved by reggicat depicting the palace columns and frescos of bull leaping that can still be seen in those places!
However, having gotten our ghosts lined up, we worried that leaving a stamp in such an ancient security-monitored place might not be such a good idea. So instead we left this memento near a place not quite so old, the 500-year old Venetian fort with its Saint Mark lions called Rocca a Mare, or Koules by the Turks, right on the harbor not far from downtown Heraklion and the cruise terminal. After taking about ten steps from the beginning of the boardwalk going to the fort entrance, we hopped off to see a round cement support post under the boardwalk there with a 3ft gray stone pillar to its right and a window-like opening in the wall above to the left. We attached this remarkable little round magnet stamp to the top of that post in the middle between the two brackets and hope it holds fast for many years !
