1275) Rhodes - Colossus stroll, planted March 2, 2026
The Island of Rhodes may be most well known these days for the imposing high-walled Old Town dating from the years of the Crusades, which housed many different nationalities of knights during those times. However, a much older claim to fame was the huge Colossus straddling Mandraki Harbor that was once one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. All that remain now are two pedestals marking the harbor entrance with a statue of a deer atop each one where each foot of the Colossus once stood. It is an easy walk along the waterfront from the cruise ship pier past Old Town curving northward toward the clock tower, with its inlaid Saint Mark Venetian lion, to reach the last bench on this inner side of the harbor entrance near where the Colossus once made his stand. If you are as fortunate as we were to be unobserved and to find that bench unoccupied, simply take a seat on its left side and reach under between the first and second screws of the circular metal brace to where we carefully tucked in another one of reggicat's famous circular magnet stamps, this one delightfully depicting the Colossus of Rhodes!
