653. The Rain in Spain (Palma de Mallorca, Spain)
Lunch stop at a "water spot" in Palma de Mallorca, Spain
One of the very few things we had known about Mallorca before visiting there was
that the great Polish pianist and composer Chopin had once spent time there as a
guest and that a rainstorm there had been the inspiration for one of his famous
"Raindrop" compositions. Well, we didn't need our umbrellas while we were
there, so we left this little "traveling' light"* one behind at a fountain
dedicated "a Jean Alcover" that is framed by s semicircle of interesting
fern-covered water-spouting animal heads! To find this particular fountain,
head north below the walls of the west side of the enormous cathedral just past
the many flowers and fountains of the long garden labelled "L'Hort de Re Fou" to
a small plaza with a compass rose on its west side and the fountains to the
east. Standing in the center of the compass rose, walk between "Migjorn" and
"Llebeig" (south) to the concrete edge bench at the end of a ray radiating
southwest from the main fountain's pool. There you should see a short double
layer of naturally eroded rough limestone rocks running just above the concrete
bench before the flower beds. At this point, look below the lower curved rock
layer beneath a reddish 2-inch stone for a 1-inch grey umbrella shaped stone
carrying an umbrella stamp glued on its back!
*"Travelin' lights" are what we call the little stones with stamps glued on back
that we have been planting for the last few years after we got tired of planting
over 500 traditional boxes and having so many of them "go missing". We hope that
these little stones are more likely to blend in with the environment and less
likely to get picked up and thrown away as trash (although, of course, they may
still get moved around by natural or unnatural processes, like raking, mowing,
etc.), so just remember that for our "traveling' lights", you're looking for a
tiny stone and not an actual box!
