654. Andante alla Torre Pendente (Livorno, Italy)
Quick "park hop" from the jump off spot for the train from Livorno to Pisa, Italy
One of the obligatory stops in Italy is, of course, the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
Having been there before, however, we doubted that there would be any good
places to hide a stamp near the very well surveilled and maintained "Campo dei
Miracoli". So, we decided to leave this funky little stone tower "traveling'
light"* on the way there from the train station in Livorno, which is the closest
cruise ship stop, and only about a 15 minute train hop away. From the main
entrance of the train station at Livorno Centrale, head out southwest into the
middle of the southern portion of the nearby park. There you should find 3
metal benches and a 3-tiered "concrete wedding cake" with bushes growing around
and in it. The northwest side has an opening into the bushes. At the base of
the bush to the left on the second level when facing in should be the little
stone with a tower glued to its backside that really doesn't look much like the
one in Pisa, but at least it's something to look for while passing through this
part of Italy!
*"Travelin' lights" are what we call the little stones with stamps glued on back
that we have been planting for the last few years after we got tired of planting
over 500 traditional boxes and having so many of them "go missing". We hope that
these little stones are more likely to blend in with the environment and less
likely to get picked up and thrown away as trash (although, of course, they may
still get moved around by natural or unnatural processes, like raking, mowing,
etc.), so just remember that for our "traveling' lights", you're looking for a
tiny stone and not an actual box!
