656. Memories of Malta (Valletta, Malta)
Lovely walk up to the gardens in an ancient walled city
Malta retains many memories of the days of the crusades, and even earlier times
from St Paul's shipwreck there in the 1st century. From the cruise ship dock in
Valletta, follow the old city fortification walls to the right along the
waterfront towards the Siege Bell. There as the path curves left, turn left at
St. Paul's Bocci Club, and head up the hill to a very colorful saint. Turn left
into Lower Barraka Park and continue curving back easterly to the southwest
corner point of the metal railing overlooking the gigantic tomb and Siege Bell.
At the third semicircular bench heading back west from this viewpoint, look
north on the pale orange limestone wall to see a sign carved in marble with the
middle part in English stating "United in Diversity". Look down right to the
northeast corner of this wall, then 4 inches up from that corner atop a small
ledge, to find a black 1/2 inch stone trying to blend in with the thin layer of
black tar filling there. On its back is another little "traveling' light"*
memory of Malta trying to be preserved.
*"Travelin' lights" are what we call the little stones with stamps glued on back
that we have been planting for the last few years after we got tired of planting
over 500 traditional boxes and having so many of them "go missing". We hope that
these little stones are more likely to blend in with the environment and less
likely to get picked up and thrown away as trash (although, of course, they may
still get moved around by natural or unnatural processes, like raking, mowing,
etc.), so just remember that for our "traveling' lights", you're looking for a
tiny stone and not an actual box!
