683. Jasper House Beaver
Jasper, AB
Drive-by en route to Jasper, near the site of an old beaver pelt trading post

We visited a couple of old trading post sites on our summer 2017 trip through Alberta and western Canada. However, we forgot to drop off this beaver at the historic Rocky Mt. House site along the Saskatchewan River, so we left it instead near the old Jasper House site along the Athabasca River.

To find this “travelin’ light” beaver, find the parking lot on the north side of the Yellowstone Highway between Jasper and Hinton. Just about halfway between the outhouse and the signs describing this site is a large spruce immediately right of the entrance trail. There, tucked under a small juniper branch at its base is a 2-inch dark rectangular stone with a beaver on its back. Continue down the trail a few minutes to view the Jasper House site itself across the river.
