732. Terrific Tenerife
A pleasant coastal walk through Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands
Hundreds of miles from both Africa and mainland Europe, the island of Tenerife contains Mount Teide, which, at over 11,000 ‘ is considered the highest mountain in all of Spain! However, if you don’t have time to go climb it or the weather is bad, consider taking a nice walk through the historic port town of Santa Cruz de Tenerife instead. Starting from the cruise terminal and ferry docks, simply follow the blue line on the walkway past info plaques about many of the notable people who have visited Tenerife over the centuries. When you get to the center of Plaza Espana with its unique four-sided cross and huge wading pool, continue south past Plaza de Iglesia (which contains the church with its cross dating from 1495 for which the town is named) to the dramatic white wave-shaped building of the Auditorio (Opera/Symphony Hall). Just past this building somewhat reminiscent of the Sydney Opera House is the small moated fort called Castillo de San Juan. Continue south across the plaza and up the stairs with Ebano on your left, and turn left on this next terrace to go to the eastern corner of this stone wall. There under a darker rock on the south side of the metal fencepost behind the bushes in that corner is where we left a small gray “travelin’ light” stone with “Tenerife” on back!
