733. Magnificent Malaga
A short walk through the early history of this large port city of Andalusia

Malaga has much history to offer, from Roman ruins to Moorish palaces to grand cathedrals to the ancient fortresses atop Mount Gibralfaro. For a short first overview, take Avenida Alcazabilla westnorthwest from Paseo del Parque (continuing west from the cruise terminal, la Farola and Centre Pompidou) towards the Roman ruins on your right with the three -tiered walls of the Alcazaba rising above and the fortifications of Mount Gibralfaro towering over that. Just past the Roman ruins is an alleyway with gated stairs on the right labeled “Mirador del Alcazaba” - entrada gratuita (free entry). Go up these cement stairs until you reach the beginning of the brown metal ramp just before the metal-encaged stairs to the top of the lookout. We left a small gray ‘travelin’ light” stone with “Malaga” on back at the left base of the 3’ brown metal railing where it meets the 3” brown metal border of the cement terrace. A nearby rectangular sitting rock makes a good place to rest before continuing up or heading around the trails on the back side of Mount Gibralfaro.
