751. Muddled in MD
Just a little MD "travelin' light” stone at a lookout near Flintstone, MD.
This little stone was meant to be left years ago as "MD at Johns Hopkins IFD”, but somehow we kept forgetting about it, so we decided to drop it off while passing through MD on our last road trip out west. We stopped at the I-68W rest area of Sideling Hill just west of Hancock to search by moonlight at the overlook there for a letterbox that turned out to have only a few pennies left in it. Worse by far, however, was that when we made our way down from the overlook, we found ourselves unexpectedly locked behind a spikey top gate! It took nearly ten minutes of doing the "triple-burst international distress signal” before the man who had unwittingly locked the gate without warning finally came out of the building to let us out - a rather rattling experience!
Anyway, after all that, we decided to use a different overlook for planting our little MD stone. We went west a bit on I-68 to exit 64 near Flintstone, south on M.V. Smith Rd and immediately right on Headquarters Rd to pick up the short overlook trail behind the building at the far end of the parking lot. Just before reaching the overlook platform, tucked under wood to the left of the first fence post on the right, is where we left a small MD memento on the back of a 2” light gray oval stone. If you're lucky, you might get to spot a bear nearby in this part of the state forest, too!
