754. IN to the Forest
A "fly-by/ birdseye view” of a national forest trailhead near Birdseye, IN
This particular drive-by in south central IN was planted at a time when we really just needed a break from busy interstate rest area stops to find a quiet place to get off the highway for a while to hike and camp. So, even though it is only about 8 miles north off I-64 from exit 72 to the western edge of this particular section of Indiana's own national forest, we don't expect anyone just passing quickly through to want to bother with it, especially since it is only a little "travelin' light” stone with no logbook. Anyone game enough to go for it anyway, though, need only head east along the railroad tracks from the center of Birdseye, following 1st St. to a "T”, and then turning right to go into the forest. From the middle of the large parking lot on the right for the Birdseye Trail (an 11-mile loop), note 3 good-sized rocks lined up with a couple of trees in the grassy clearing. On the north side of the 3rd rock between the trees and behind a little trapdoor is where we left a small 1-2” dark stone shaped somewhat like the state of Indiana with IN stuck on back.
