Just enough time for a quick decision at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center in The Dalles, OR

In the mid 19th century, pioneers along the Oregon trail had to make an important decision right around this point near the end of their long journey: whether to float down the Columbia River, which was very expensive for those with little money left, or take the terribly rough route over the Barlow Pass Toll Road. To get a feel for this choice, take a very short stroll from the parking lot at the Discovery Center to the area to the east with the faded blue wagon. Once you find "Point of Decision” rock, simply take 17 steps at 200 degrees to the southeast corner of old brown building #5 and look under the leaning branch of a large sagebrush, under a chunk of black lava rock, for this tiny gray stone with its abbreviated exclamation of historic indecision on back. (Yup, another pathetic example of our "travelin' light” carving, but somehow all we can now muster - if anyone wants to carve replacements for any of these, please feel free!)
