780. Passing through Panama
Quick pick-up box on the east side of the Panama Canal/Gatun Lake pick-up spot

Colon, on the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal, has gotten quite bit “run down” in recent years, so it now seems to be mainly used as a courtesy pick-up spot for people getting off ships going through the Panama Canal on rainforest tours. We couldn’t pass up an opportunity to leave a “travelin’ light” stone here, though, so we braved the barbed wire fence “gauntlet” running from the cruise port to the supposedly safe shopping mall called Colon 2000. Just south of the multi-hued mall is a large colorful COLON sign - blue, green, purple and yellow shading to red on the lower right corner. Pause perhaps for someone to take your photo with that sign, standing just behind the red right corner and noticing a small broken electric wire cage in an “pool” of black stones at your feet. If you bend down to re-tie your shoe or something, perhaps you will find a Panama memento on the back of a 1” oval stone that is just slightly larger and lighter than the surrounding ones. Don’t linger long, though - this spot is just in front of a “No Traspase” sign on a tall barbed wire fence, and you never know who might be watching or lurking beyond!
