819. Roamin’ in Roma
Pleasant Sunday stroll through Villa Borghese Park in Rome (a fairly easy walk from Termini station)
Most everyone has probably heard of the “Pines of Rome”, but perhaps fewer know about the “Valley of the Plane Trees” (Valle dei Platani) planted in Villa Borghese Park in the 1600’s. There are lots of nooks and crannies in those old trees, but to make this little “travelin’ light “ stamp easier to spot, simply find the sign describing them conveniently located on a route between a couple of other letterboxes. Then walk northwest about 26 steps to the southwest side of some tall ruins, then northeast up and over a couple of steps to cross the threshold. Immediately upon stepping down into the dirt interior with a statue of a woman on its far side, turn around and, when no one else is paying attention, look in a low crevice an inch or so from the south wall for a thin black shield-shaped stone with “Roma” on back. Please make sure to tuck the stone carefully back into the crack when no one is looking so that none of the pink stuff of the stamp is showing before continuing on with your Roman roaming!
