827. Little Pumpkins in the Hollow
A pair of pumpkin plants to pick up now in CT
After crawling through the snow and ice-bedecked caves of the Chatfield Trail in the bleak midwinter of 2019, when very little else seemed to be getting planted in our part of southern New England, we felt like including some additional little incentive to get others back out to this cool area that used to be quite popular for letterboxing many years ago. All we had with us at the time, though, were a couple of pumpkins carved by Spoiled Rotten of OH, which we had planted for southern RI’s 18th Annual Fall Gathering, but which had only been found by a handful of RI letterboxers.
So, we decided we might as well transplant them here to Chatfield Hollow for awhile to “jumpstart” another CT adventure or two for the CT crowd. To find them, carefully cross from the Chatfield Hollow parking lot on the north side of route 80 to the blue Chatfield Trail sign on the south side, and immediately see the small bridge welcoming hikers onto the trail. Check the right corner of the bridge before crossing for one little pumpkin in a black pouch under a stone, then check the left corner after crossing for another one tucked into the small space between the rock platform step and the rock bridge foundation. Now head off and have yourself a nice adventure!
