847. Regal Riga
Easy stroll from near the Freedom Monument in Latvia’s capital
We found the Old Town, Royal Palace and the Art Nouveau districts of Riga to be so remarkably well-kept that we would have had a hard time planting anything anywhere there that might have had a chance of lasting. Even where we finally decided to leave this little “travelin’ light” stone at the last minute seemed rather precarious, so please be on the lookout for other people around and about, if you do get a chance to look for it.
Since we were running late in leaving town, as usual, we simply hopped across the street from our hotel, The Radisson Blu with its spectacular 26th floor overview of the city, and headed south once again on Brivibas towards the Freedom Monument and gold-domed Russian Orthodox Cathedral. However, this time before we even got there, we cut west into the south side of the first park to a good-sized multi-trunk tree near the black fence surrounding the cathedral. There about 6 inches up on the west side of the tree trunk under bits of bark and a 2-inch black rock is where we left a small flat silvery sliver of stone with “Riga” on back. Hope it lasts a little while at least!
