850. Spring Wake-Up Call
Another “trio” of sewsewbizzy stamps now planted in a new preserve in Tiverton, RI
1. Wake Up!
2. Spring Ahead!
3. Whatever the Year!
We had meant to plant this former event stamp combo of sewsewbizzy’s at the site of the annual vernal equinox dawn dance atop Lantern Hill, in North Stonington, CT, but, as usual, we were running short on time. So, when RIClimber planted his “Short on Time” series at a new preserve that we had noticed fairly recently along the west side of route 77, just north of the south prong of Nanaquaket Road in Tiverton, RI, we thought that perhaps we, too, would put these stamps in there as an additional incentive for letterboxers to get out and have some adventure in a new place!
So, to find these “add-ons”, simply follow the “Short on Time” clues till you get to the loop. If you are really short on time, I suppose you could skip the loop (but why would you want to do that and miss all the great rocks?) to just plop down on the 2’ lichen-covered rock to the right of the trail immediately before the stone wall there at the junction. (This would be between #7 and #8 for those doing the whole loop series, and would be on your left just after you exit the wall.) While sitting facing the wall, simply reach down with your right hand on the south side of the rock to carefully uncover a small black pouch well hidden under leaves and a 5” stone.
Now take the Cliff Trail south prong to the overlook, between RIClimber’s #8 and #9. Probably not a good idea to “spring ahead” here, especially with children, but if you stop at a tall thin cedar near the cliff edge and spring back 5 steps east towards a very large multi-trunk tree looming in the near distance, you may find a quiet spot (if it doesn’t get overgrown with briars) to sit on another 2’ rock just behind a tree. Under many leaves and a stick or stone or two in the slight indentation on the front side of that rock behind the tree is where we left a second black pouch.
Finally, heading out between #9 and #10 on the last short downhill stretch about 30 steps before leveling out, look under a rock in the notch on the slightly raised back terrace of the fairly slender leggy multi-birch on the right with a low sitting rock to its right. There we left the third black pouch with the year that this stamp combo first came out, but perhaps it really doesn’t matter whatever the year as long as we keep trying to do whatever we can with our short time here! Cheers and thanks to RIClimber for keeping on planting so many traditional letterboxes for us to enjoy, too!
