870. Westerly, RI - 350 Years
Placed: Oct 24, 2019
All during 2019, the town of Westerly has been celebrating 350 years since its official founding. Our band, the Westerly Band, founded in 1854, and still considered the oldest continuous civic marching and concert band in the country, has been playing several extra events this year in celebration of Westerly’s 350th, too. Each time we would play a concert for removal of former time capsule, main summer festivities, reburial of time capsule, etc., we would tell ourselves that we really should plant a letterbox in memory of this milestone, but then we would quickly forget! Finally, however, mentioning it to connecticut croaker in mid fall, we were delighted that she said she would be willing to carve something spur-of the-moment for us. The result is a fine carving of Westerly’s town seal that can be found at the Artists Cooperative, now housed in Westerly’s old railroad station, open 11AM - 7PM Wednesday through Saturday and 1 -5 on Sunday. Just look under the telephone slightly to the right of the desk as you enter, behind a small sign about the history of weathergrams. Then feel free to look around the art cooperative, which is also where we recently bought a landscape painting by John Maguire to celebrate the first letterbox mystery we ever solved that helped kick off our love of letterboxing almost 20 years ago!
