929. Butterfly Snowflakes (7) - limited time
Charlestown, RI
Part of a mini flurry of snowflakes carved by connecticut croaker and chicktiechick, now sent over to spend a little time in southern RI before the snows really begin to fly! Please pay special attention to replacing as found each of these graciously loaned snowflakes to make sure that we can get them all back safely to CT in time for Christmas!
Behind the Cross Mills Library in our hometown is a small cedar swamp preserve that is supposedly home to the rare Hessel's Hairstreak Butterfly that is "an obligate feeder on White Cedar", so we thought this might be a good place for some lepidoptera snowflakes!
To find these little rosy butterfly snowflakes in black pouches, take the orange trail from the northeast corner of the lower parking area behind the library.
#1 is behind "Black Cherry" on your right, under leaves at base of tree.
#2 is under a rock behind "Mountain Laurel", just right of a tall bench.
#3 is under a rock on the right side behind "Pitch Pine".
#4 is in the pine-needly crook above "White Pine" on the right.
#5, curving left to stay on the orange trail, is on the left side of "Pin Oak.
#6, after crossing a slightly overgrown section to go up a rise and curve left, is just to the right on the orange trail where the yellow trail comes in from the left (library in view ahead) behind "Princess Pine".
#7, after crossing a small bridge, is on the right tucked under front roots behind "Red Maple".
Now just continue on the short loop back to the library and your car!
