THOMAS MINER / MINOR Family

There is a document written about 1683 and titled "An Herauldical Essay Upon the Surname of Miner" which traces the Miner ancestry back to Henry Bullman in the 1300s. The purported line of descent was Henry (died 1359) -> Henry (m. Henrietta Hicks) -> William (b. ca 1375) -> Thomas -> Lodowick (m. Anna Dyer) -> Thomas (1436-1480, m. Bridget Hervie) -> William (m. Isabella Hartope) -> William (Buried 23 Feb 1585) -> Clement (died 31 March 1640) -> Thomas (the immigrant).

A study, named "The Curious Pedigree of Lt. Thomas Minor" by John A. Miner and Robert F. Miner and published in the NEHGS Register of Jul 1984 (volume 138, pages 182-5), indicates that the contents of this document and the coat of arms it presents are FALSE. What has been found regarding the Miner family in the English records follows.

WILLIAM MINER (MINOR, MYNAR) is listed as a resident paying taxes (one of 13) in North Elm section of Chew Magna, Somersett, England in 1523 (Paid 4p tax on goods assessed at 2�4s.). Wife unknown. He received a Chew Magna house and land grant on 29 Jun 1554 with his son Thomas and Thomas' wife, Joan. He was buried at Chew Magna on 23 February 1585/6.

He may be related to John Minere who appears on a Chew Magna manor account roll for the year 1494-5 as paying for the grass on 46 acres of meadow and to Joan Minere, a widow, who appears on that roll as paying a tax known as churchscot.

THOMAS MINER of Chew Magna, Somerset, England was born roughly 1530 in Chew Magna, son of William Miner. He married Joan [__?__] about 1554/9. He was a tailor and resident of Chew Magna in 1556 at which time it was known as a cloth making town. He was buried at Chew Magna on 15 November 1573. An abstract of his will, dated 20 October 1573 and proved 15 September 1574, survives. It indicated his desire to be buried in the church yard of Chew. To the church he granted 4 pence, to sons Clement and John a lamb each, to daughter Edith a lamb and a yearling heifer, residue to wife Joan, Executrix. To William Winch and Thomas Horte as witnesses he granted each 20 pence. The inventory of his estate totaled 16 pounds 5 shillings.

The manor court rolls show Joan succeeding her husband on 19 Jul 1574 under a grant of 29 Jun 1554. She was buried at Chew Magna on 21 December 1592.

CLEMENT MINER was born in Chew Magna, Somerset, England about 1560, son of Thomas Miner and Joan [__?__]. Wife unknown. [ 1996: possible marriage dated 5 Feb 1582/3 at Portishead, Somerset ] He was buried in Chew Magna on 31 March 1640.

An abstract of the will of his daughter Mary exists. The will was dated 4 Dec 1640, and proved 23 Feb 1640/1, value of estate was �25-2-2. It lists the children of Clement Miner (William and Israel), Thomas Bucke (Richard, Mary and John), and John Tompkins (John, Eleanor and Mary). Somerset Record Office DD/X/SR 3 b, p89.

1. THOMAS MINER / MINOR was born in Chew Magna, county of Somerset, England on 23 April 1608, son of Clement Miner. He emigrated to Massachusetts, USA perhaps in 1629 on the Lyon's Whelp as Banks ⁹ states or maybe a couple of years later on the Arabella as many older writings claim, all apparently without any real proof. It seems more likely that he would have departed from the port of Bristol (only a few miles from Chew Magna) perhaps on the Lyon in its spring of 1630 voyage. The first reference to Thomas in New England is in the formation record of Congregational Church of Charlestown, Massachusetts dated 2 November 1632 (Ch ChR). That record refers to him and the others listed as dismissed from the Boston Church on Oct 14, 1632.

He married Grace PALMER on 23 April 1634 in Massachusetts. She was born about 1612, the daughter of Walter Palmer of Charlestown. Their first child, John, was born in Charlestown, and then in 1636 they moved to Hingham, MA where more children were born.

In 1645, they joined John Winthrop Jr. and company in the settlement of New London, CT. On 15 Oct 1652 Thomas sold his home lot in New London located at the head of Close Cove and settled in Stonington, CT with Walter Palmer (his father-in-law), William Chesebrough, and Thomas Stanton. The Stonington Historical Society has more information on the settling of the town. There is a monument to these founders (dedicated 31 August 1899) located in the Wequetequock Cemetery with one side dedicated to Thomas. In 1653 he bought some land from Cary Latham and moved from the Wequetequock area to the west side of the mouth of Quiambaug Cove near Mystic, CT and began one of the few diaries to survive from this period. This diary covers the period from 1653 through 1684 and was published as a book11 in 1899. He was among those who began the church at Stonington in June 1674. He was active in the affairs in both New London and Stonington and held many public service positions of trust and honor including deputy to the Connecticut General Court. He is the Thomas Miner who wrote back to England about 1683/4 and received an essay which favors the Miner over the Minor spelling of the name and which traces the Miner ancestry back to the 1300s. The information in this document, including the coat of arms it presents, is believed to be false. After receiving this document some his descendants used the Miner spelling of the name while others retained the Minor spelling especially the descendants of his son John then of Woodbury, CT.

Some of the land he owned in the Taugwonk area of Stonington is now a land preserve.

He died in Stonington, CT on 23 October 1690, and his wife died there on 31 December 1690. Both are buried at Stonington in the Wequetequock Cemetery under a prone, inscribed granite slab which reads "HERE LYES THE BODY OF LIUTENANT THOMAS MINOR AGED 83 -- DEPARTED 1690" and on the other side "HIS WIFE 1608 GRACE PALMER 1690". To get to Wequetequock Cemetery take Route 1, east from Stonington, CT or west from Pawcatuck, CT. When you reach the head of the cove, at the stop light, turn south on to Greenhaven Road, then take an immediate right onto Palmer Road. The cemetery is on your left.

SECOND GENERATION

Six of Thomas's eleven children left descendants.

2. JOHN MINOR was baptized on 30 Aug 1635 in Charlestown, MA, son of Thomas Miner and Grace Palmer. He spelled his name Minor and so did most of his descendants. On 23 September 1654, John Stanton and John Minor were selected for teachers of the Gospel to the Indians. Both young men, however, left their studies. About a year later John moved to Stratford, CT where on 19 Oct 1658 he married Elizabeth BOOTH. She was born in Stratford on 10 Sep 1641, a daughter of Richard and Elizabeth of Stratford. A dispute over the replacement of the first pastor, the aging Mr Blackman, arose. The followers of Israel Chauncey remained in Stratford while the followers of Zechariah Walker received permission to start a new plantation at Woodbury in May of 1672. John Minor settled in what is now Woodbury, CT in the spring of 1673 where he was town clerk for about 30 years before dying there on 17 September 1719. Elizabeth died on 24 October 1732.

3. CLEMENT MINER[2] was baptized on 4 Mar 1638 in Hingham, MA, son of Thomas Miner and Grace Palmer. He moved to New London, CT in 1645 with his father and remained there after his father moved on to Stonington, CT. On 26 Nov 1662 he married Frances BURCHAM daughter of Edward Burcham of Lynn, MA and widow of Isaac Willey Jr. She died on 6 December 1672 shortly after the birth of Ann, and he married second Martha WELLMAN, daughter of William Wellman and Elizabeth Spencer, on 20 Feb 1672/3. She died on 5 Jul 1681, and he married third Joanna [__?__]. He died in or near New London, CT on 8 Oct 1700 and was buried in the Ancient Burying Ground where there is a stone slab marked "C M 1700". Joanna died on 10 October 1700.

5. EPHRAIM MINER was baptized on 1 May 1642 in Hingham, MA, son of Thomas Miner and Grace Palmer. He moved to New London, CT in 1645 with his father and onto Stonington in 1652 where he remained on his father's homestead at Quiambaug. He married Hannah AVERY, daughter of Capt. James Avery and Joanna Greenslade of New London (now Poquonnock Bridge) on 20 Jun 1666. He died in Stonington on 16 May 1724 and was buried there in Old Taugwonk Cemetery with a large carved slab over his grave along with Hannah who died on 22 August 1721.

6. Dr. JOSEPH MINER was baptized on 25 Aug 1644 in Hingham, MA, son of Thomas Miner and Grace Palmer. He moved to New London, CT in 1645 with his father and onto Stonington in 1652. He married Mary AVERY, daughter of Capt. James Avery and Joanna Greenslade of New London (now Poquonnock Bridge) on 28 Oct 1668. She died on 31 January 1707/8 and was buried in Old Taugwonk Cemetery on 2 February. He married second Bridget CHESEBROUGH, daughter of Nathaniel and Hannah on 7 Dec 1709. She was the widow of William Thompson who died 1 Jun 1705. Joseph was a farmer and a physician in Stonington. He died in Stonington on 1 Feb 1711/2 and was buried there in Old Taugwonk Cemetery . Bridget died on 24 November 1758.

8. MANASSAH MINER, son of Thomas Miner and Grace Palmer, was born on 28 Apr 1647, the first white male child born in New London, CT. He married first Lydia MOORE on 26 Sep 1670 who died 12 August 1720. He married second Mrs Frances WERDEN on 20 Apr 1721. He is often mentioned in his father's diary, and, on his father's death, he inherited the family farm at Quiambaug Cove in Stonington, CT. He died in Stonington on 22 Aug 1728 and was buried there at Wequetequock Cemetery under a large carved slab.

12. HANNAH MINER was born 15 Sep 1655 and baptized 28 October 1655 in Stonington, CT, daughter of Thomas Miner and Grace Palmer. She married Thomas AVERY, son of Capt. James Avery and Joanna Greenslade of New London (now Poquonnock Bridge area in Groton, CT) on 22 Oct 1677. She died before 11 March 1692/3 when Thomas Avery married second with Hannah Raymond, widow of Edward Buckley, in Wethersfield, CT. They had Joshua, Isaac, Charles, Mrs Hyde and Mrs Griswold. He died on 5 Jan 1736/7 in Montville, CT.

14. THOMAS MINOR was born on 29 May 1662 in Stratford, CT (LR1p50), son of John Minor and Elizabeth Booth. He married Hannah CURTISS, daughter of Israel Curtiss and Rebecca. They lived in Woodbury, CT. He died on 15 Jun 1722 in Woodbury (LR2 p165).

16. ELIZABETH MINOR was born on 16 Jan 1666/7 in Stratford, CT (LR1 p52), daughter of John Minor and Elizabeth Booth. In 1689, she married Zechariah WALKER, born 22 May 1670, son of Zechariah Walker and Mary Prudden. Their children were born in Woodbury, CT and baptized there at the First Congregation Church. She died on 19 Dec 1749 and he died on 21 Dec 1753.

17. GRACE MINOR was born on 12 Sep 1670 in Stratford, CT (LR1p55), daughter of John Minor and Elizabeth Booth. On 11 Apr 1688 in Windsor, CT, she married Samuel GRANT, son of Samuel Grant and Mary Porter. Their son, Noah, was the ancestor of President Ulysses Grant. He died on 8 May 1710, and she died on 16 Apr 1753 in East Windsor, CT.

18. JOSEPH MINOR was born on 4 March 1672/3 in Stratford, CT (LR1p50), son of John Minor and Elizabeth Booth. On 12 Jul 1710, he married Susanna ROOT, born 13 May 1678 in Fairfield, CT, daughter of John Root and Dorcas Abbott. He served the town of Woodbury in many capacities for many years and achieved the military rank of Colonel. He died on 30 Oct 1774 in Woodbury aged 101 years. Susanna died on 26 Apr 1738.

19. Sgt. EPHRAIM MINOR was born on 24 Oct 1675 in Stratford, CT (LR1p50), son of John Minor and Elizabeth Booth. On 21 Aug 1701, he married Rebecca CURTISS, daughter of Israel Curtiss and Rebecca. He died on 16 Sep 1762 in Woodbury, and she died on 13 March 1763.

21. ABIGAIL MINOR was born on 6 Feb 1680/1 in Woodbury, CT, daughter of John Minor and Elizabeth Booth. On 8 Feb 1698/9 in Woodbury (LR2 p200), she married John TREADWELL. born 11 Feb 1673/4, son of Samuel Treadwell and Ruth Wheeler. He died on 15 Aug 1716 in Stratford, and she married second Samuel MILES (23 Mar 1671/2 - 5 Jul 1756) on 22 Nov 1721. She died on 10 Aug 1759.

Descendants of Clement Miner

23. MARY MINER was born on 29 Jan 1663/4 in New London, CT, daughter of Clement Miner and Frances Burcham. In 168x, she became the second wife of Thomas LEACH. She died possibly on 4 March 1697/8. He married third Mary TUBBS on 8 December 1706 and had 6 additional children before he died on 24 Nov 1732. His first wife was Abigail HOUGHTON who died soon after the birth of their one child.

24. JOSEPH MINER[3] was born on 6 Aug 1666 in New London, CT, son of Clement Miner and Frances Burcham. On 12 Mar 1689, he married Elizabeth COMSTOCK, daughter of John Comstock and Abigail Chappell. She died on 3 May 1692, and on 20 Aug 1706 he married second Susanna KEENEY, daughter of John Keeney and his first wife, Sarah Douglas. She was the widow of Ezekiel Turner. She died on 13 Dec 1748 (HD⁷), and he married third Mrs Mary BUSHNELL on 2 Oct 1750 (HD⁷). He died in New London on 6 Apr 1752 (HD⁷ p586), and she died 30 Oct 1752 (HD⁷ p597). They are likely buried at the Ancient Burial Ground on Hempstead Street in New London as the Second Burial Ground wasn't opened until 1793.

25. CLEMENT MINER was born on 6 October 1668 in New London, CT, son of Clement Miner and Frances Burcham. On 4 August 1698 he married Martha MOULD, born 24 Dec 1674, a daughter of Hugh Mould and Martha Coit. He died in New London on 8 Apr 1740 and she died on 2 Aug 1743 (HD⁷ p413).

He married Sarah BECKWITH, daughter of Joseph Beckwith and Susanna Tallman of Lyme, CT. He died on 18 Apr 1725 and was buried in Old Stone Church Cemetery in East Lyme. Sarah died on 24 Mar 1721/2 (HD⁷ p119).

28. PHEBE MINER was born on April 13th in New London, CT and baptized there on 26 Jul 1674 at the First Church. She was a daughter of Clement Miner and Martha Wellman. On 17 Jun 1697 (TR v1p23), she married John STUBBINS/STEBBINS, son of John and Deborah. He died 16 September 1756 (HD⁷ p674) and she died on 17 Jul 1751 (HD⁷ p571).

30. Lt. EPHRAIM MINER was born on 22 Jun 1668 in Stonington, CT, son of Ephraim Miner and Hannah Avery. He married Mary STEVENS daughter of Richard and Mary of Taunton, MA on 24 May 1694 (TR v2 p9). He died in New London on 19 Feb 1739/40 and she died on 27 Sep 1748. Buried in Old Taugwonk Cemetery, Stonington.

32. HANNAH MINER was born on 20 Apr 1671 in Stonington, CT, daughter of Ephraim Miner and Hannah Avery. On 6 Jan 1691/2 (Stonington v2p7), she married Samuel FRINK born 14 Feb 1669, son of John Frink and Grace Stevens. He died 12 Oct 1713 (v2p7) and she died about 1751.

35. ELIZABETH MINER was born on 30 Apr 1674 in Stonington, CT, daughter of Ephraim Miner and Hannah Avery. On 16 Oct 1692, she married John BROWN, son of Thomas Brown and Mary Newhall.

She died on 8 Sep 1697 in Westerly after having 1 daughter, Deborah born 29 Aug 1697 in Westerly, RI (TR v1p58). He married second Patience Potts on 11 Dec 1700 and died on 18 Sep 1706 in Westerly, RI.

Daughter Deborah married Nicholas Frink on 30 Nov 1715 (Ston. v3p6) in New London and died in 1750 in Horry Co., SC; 9 children.

39. SAMUEL MINER was born on 28 Aug 1680 in Stonington, CT, son of Ephraim Miner and Hannah Avery. On 2 Apr 1702, he married Ann DENISON, daughter of John and Phebe. He died on 8 Dec 1717 in Stonington, and she married her cousin, Edward Denison, on 2 March 1717/8.

40. JAMES MINER was born in Nov 1682 in Stonington, CT, son of Ephraim Miner and Hannah Avery. On 22 Feb 1704/5, he married Abigail ELDREDGE, born 19 Aug 1688 daughter of Daniel Eldredge of Kingston, RI. She died on 13 Aug 1720. He married second Sarah AYERS of Newport, RI on 4 May 1721. He died on 3 Jun 1726, and was buried in Old Taugwonk Cemetery, Stonington. She died about 1751.

41. GRACE MINER was born in Sep 1683 in Stonington, CT, daughter of Ephraim Miner and Hannah Avery. On 10 Jan 1701/2, she married William PALMER, son of Gershom and Ann. They lived in what is now North Stonington. He died about 1729.

He was born in Duxbury, MA on 13 Dec 1669. Their children were born in Stonington and they later moved to SE corner of Tolland, CT about 1720 where all the children's marriages were recorded. She was born on 4 Sep 1681 in Stonington, the daughter of Joseph Saxton and Hannah Denison. He died 28 Feb 1710/1. She married second Joseph Page on 5 March 1712/3, and died on 15 Oct 1750. On 9 Jul 1700, she married Stephen RICHARDSON, son of Stephen Richardson and Lydia Gilbert of Preston, CT. They had at least 1 child born in Stonington, CT. She died 15 Jan 1726. He married second with Abigail Pelham on 25 March 1728 at Newport, RI and died 11 Aug 1749 in Lebanon, CT (TR v1 p269).

50. CHRISTOPHER MINER was born on 28 Dec 1683 in Stonington, CT, son of Joseph Miner and Mary Avery. On 9 Mar 1703/4, he married Mary LAY, daughter of Robert and Mary. He died on 11 Dec 1707, and she married second Joseph Page on 12 April 1709.

51. PRUDENCE MINER was baptized on 6 May 1688 in Stonington, CT, daughter of Joseph Miner and Mary Avery. On 17 Feb 1707, she married Joseph DENISON, son of George and Mercy. He died on 18 Feb 1724/5, and she died on 17 May 1726 in Lebanon. Buried in Old Taugwonk Cemetery, Stonington.

52. BRIDGET MINER was born on 31 Jan 1710/1 in Stonington, CT, daughter of Joseph Miner and Bridget Chesebrough. On 5 Nov 1730, she married Jonathan CHESEBROUGH, son of Samuel and Marie. She died on 23 Apr 1766.

54. ELNATHAN MINER was born on 28 Dec 1671 as recorded in Stonington, CT, but he is also recorded in New London, CT as born 5 Oct 1671, son of Manassah Miner and Lydia Moore. He was baptized at First Church of New London on 10 March 1671/2. On 21 Mar 1694, he married Rebecca BALDWIN. They had 4 children born in Stonington, CT. She died on 12 Mar 1700/1, and he married second Prudence RICHARDSON, daughter of Amos Richardson and widow of John Hallam, on 17 Mar 1702/3. They had 1 child born in Stonington. She died on 6 Aug 1716, and he married third Tamsen WILCOX on 14 Oct 1718 (TR: v2p52). They had 1 child born in Stonington. Elnathan died on 11 Oct 1756 (HD⁷). Elnathan and his wives are buried in Thomas Miner Cemetery.

57. LYDIA MINER was baptized on 17 Aug 1679 in New London, CT, daughter of Manassah Miner and Lydia Moore. On 8 Jul 1706, she married Sylvester BALDWIN, son of John and Rebecca. They had 1 child, John born and died 18 April 1707 (Ston. TR v1p102). She died on 21 Apr 1707. He married second on 19 May 1724 with Elizabeth AVERY, daughter of Thomas and Hannah, had two more children, and died in 1732.

58. THOMAS MINER was born on 20 Sep 1683 in Stonington, CT, son of Manassah Miner and Lydia Moore. On 26 Dec 1706, he married Hannah AVERY, daughter of Thomas and Hannah. He was buried on 12 Apr 1739 (HD⁷ p348) at Wequetequock Cemetery under a large carved slab. He left a will dated 9 Apr 1739. She died on 9 Dec 1761 (TR v2 p53) and was buried in Thomas Miner Cemetery, Stonington.

12-i. THOMAS AVERY was born on 20 Apr 1679 in Groton, CT, son of Hannah Miner and Thomas Avery. He married Ann SHAPLEY on 12 Jul 1704. She was born on 31 Aug 1685 and died on 7 Jun 1751. He died before 21 Nov 1710/11 when Ann married Jonathan Roffe (Ross).

12-ii. SAMUEL AVERY was born on 15 Nov 1680 in Groton, CT, son of Hannah Miner and Thomas Avery. On 23 Jun 1702, he married Elizabeth RANSFORD, daughter of Jonathan Ransford of Boston. In 1710 he bought land on north side of Saw-mill Brook in Mohegan section of Montville, CT. He died on 25 Feb 1749/0. She died on 9 Sep 1761.

In his will dated Feb. 22, 1749/50, New London, North Parish, Samuel Avery mentioned wife, Elizabeth; sons, John and Ephraim; daughters, Martha, Elizabeth, Alethea, Hannah, Anna and Mary; son Ransford deceased and his son Samuel who now lives with me.

Many of the female lines are continued in Richard Wheeler's History of the Town of Stonington⁵ (1900). Additional descendants are continued in William Cothren's History of Ancient Woodbury, CT¹ (1854). The Parkhurst Manuscript⁴ (c.1935) describes many of the New London and Lyme families. Numbering system taken from Thomas Minor, Descendants, 1608 - 1981² by John A Minor (1981) which continues many of the lines for several generations.
